Affirmative Action is adopted in Washington, D.C.
March 6, 1961
President John F. Kennedy signs executive order 10925 requiring federal government contractors to take “affirmative action” to promote minority employment. The policy is reinforced by President Lyndon Johnson on September 24, 1965, and upheld by the Supreme court in a pair of cases on July 2, 1986.
